Shut the water off at the main, kill power to an electric water heater if that is what let go, and only then decide whether this needs a plumber tonight. A burst supply line, sewage coming up inside the house, no water at all, or a gas smell cannot wait. A drip, one slow drain or a running toilet can. If you are standing in it right now, do the next section first and come back after.
Stop the water. Every minute the line runs is more drywall, more flooring, more subfloor. If you can see which fixture is failing, close the stop valve under the sink or behind the toilet, clockwise and gently. If it is corroded, do not force it into a snapped stem. This is where national advice fails Baldwin County. It says check the basement. Houses here do not have one.
Slab and pier homes. Most homes in Foley, Robertsdale, Summerdale and Elberta sit on a slab, so the main is one of two places: the meter box at the street or yard edge, a rectangular lid flush in the ground with a valve on the house side of the meter, or an exterior wall where the supply enters, often near a hose bib. Some meter boxes need a meter key. Pier homes in Fort Morgan and Perdido Beach usually have the valve just inside the perimeter.
Condos and beach rentals. This one catches people. Most units in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have a unit level shutoff in a utility or laundry closet, or behind an access panel near the water heater, and it stops water to your unit only. There is also a building riser shutoff, and in nearly every building that one is controlled by management, not by you. If the unit valve does not stop it, call building emergency maintenance at the same time you call a plumber, because no plumber can reach that riser without them.
Find your shutoff on a calm afternoon and photograph it. Two in the morning is a bad time to go looking.
If an electric water heater let go, switch off its breaker before the tank empties. An element firing in a draining tank burns out fast, and you turn a leak into a leak plus a ruined heater. If you cannot find the right breaker, the main breaker is a fine answer. Gas units have a control knob, so turn it to off or pilot.
If water has reached an outlet, a power strip or an appliance, do not touch it, and do not plug in a shop vac while standing in that water. Cut the circuit first. If the panel is wet or you smell gas, leave and call from outside.
This is the part a reputable shop tells you straight and a call center will not. Plenty of it sits quietly until 8am, and paying after hours rates for that is money wasted. We tell people to wait all the time.
These can wait. One dripping faucet. A single slow drain while the rest of the house drains fine. A running toilet you can silence at its stop valve. A water heater that is out but not leaking. A hidden leak you have already stopped at the main, which is a daylight job for leak detection.
These cannot. A burst or spraying supply line. Sewage backing up indoors. No water at all. A heater dumping into a closet, attic or living space. Any leak you cannot stop. A grinder pump alarm. A gas smell, which is evacuate first, call second.
The line is simple: water damaging the structure, contaminated water indoors, or a safety risk. Everything else is inconvenience, and inconvenience keeps.

Ask directly: am I speaking with the company doing the work or a dispatch service, who is the licensed plumber, and are you local to Baldwin County. A real shop answers all three without hesitating.
A very large share of housing in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, Fort Morgan and Perdido Beach is rented or empty for stretches of the year, which changes the math.
A line that bursts in an occupied house runs for minutes. The same line in an empty condo in February runs until somebody notices, which can be days. That is no longer a repair. That is a ceiling, a floor, the unit below, and an insurance claim.
Three things to have in place beforehand. Know the shutoff and write it down, a photo in the property file plus the building maintenance number. Have someone local with access, a manager, cleaner or neighbor who can get in the door tonight, because a plumber who cannot get inside cannot help.
